'Silent Friend' Lookin' at Trees, Lookin' at Us: Real Talk on Connection
This movie 'bout humans and plants got me thinkin': how we connectin' with nature, and how that connects to the struggle?

Aight, so peep this: Silent Friend, new flick by Ildikó Enyedi, dropped. It’s supposed to be about how we connect with trees and plants and all that. Sounds kinda out there, but hold up. It got layers, fam. It jumps around to different times, all at this college in Germany.
First up, it's 2020. We got Tony (played by Tony Leung Chiu-wai), this cat from Hong Kong, stuck on campus 'cause of Rona. He's feelin' isolated, right? Then he starts listenin' to this French botanist, Alice (Léa Seydoux), online. She be preachin' 'bout how plants got brains and can think. So, Tony, bored outta his mind, starts messin' with this old-ass ginkgo tree. He puttin' sensors on it, tryna see if it's talkin'. Straight up, I be doin' this. I got plants and i like to talk to them and make sure they are good.
Then it jumps back to 1908. This chick, Grete (Luna Wedler), the first woman in the botany program. She's fightin' the patriarchy just to learn 'bout plants. Mad respect. She starts takin' pics of fruits and veggies, seein' the beauty in nature. Shows how hard women had it just to get they knowledge, man. And it hasn’t been long since this.
Then it’s 1972, with Hannes (Enzo Brumm). He watchin' his roommate's geranium. He be studyin' it, tryin' to figure out what it's feelin'. It's a whole vibe. He probably gettin' high and havin' conversations with the damn thing. I feel him.
The movie uses different looks for each time. Black and white for the old days, grainy color for the '70s, all shiny and digital for 2020. It's tryin' to show how things change, but somethin's always the same. Life is still hard out here. People try to stay connected, to each other, to the earth.
This movie made me think. How we treatin' the earth? How we treatin' each other? Are we even listenin'? 'Cause the trees, the plants, they been here longer than us. Maybe they got somethin' to say. And we definitely need to start listenin'.
It's kinda deep, not gonna lie. It shows how we all connected, even across time. This joint can be a reflection for all of us that need some guidance.
Enyedi, the director, she did On Body and Soul before, 'bout people connectin' in dreams. She know how to tap into some real stuff. Silent Friend is just straight facts.
